What Kao Does
Kao bridges the gap between popular emote platforms and Discord. It allows you to:
- Search emotes across 7TV, BetterTTV, and FrankerFaceZ
- Import emotes directly to your Discord server
- Manage your server's existing emojis
The BYOB Model
Kao uses a "Bring Your Own Bot" (BYOB) model. Instead of using a shared bot that's in thousands of servers, you connect your own Discord bot. This gives you:
- Privacy - Your bot token is encrypted and only you have access
- Control - Customize your bot's name, avatar, and presence
- No rate limits - You're not sharing API limits with other users
- Persistence - Your bot stays in your server even if you stop using Kao
Emote Sources
7TV
7TV is a popular emote platform with millions of community-created emotes. It supports both static and animated emotes, and has a robust search for browsing.
BetterTTV (BTTV)
BetterTTV is one of the oldest and most popular Twitch emote extensions. Many iconic emotes originated here.
FrankerFaceZ (FFZ)
FrankerFaceZ is another established emote platform, known for high-quality static emotes.
Discord Emoji Limits
Discord servers have limits on how many emojis they can have:

How Import Works
When you import an emote through Kao:
- You search and select an emote from 7TV, BTTV, or FFZ
- Kao fetches the emote and processes it for Discord
- Your connected bot uploads the emote to your server
- The emote appears in your server's emoji list
This all happens in seconds, making it much faster than manual downloading and uploading.
Security
- Encrypted tokens - Your bot token is stored securely
- Discord OAuth - Sign in through Discord, we never see your password
- No message access - Kao never reads your Discord messages
- Minimal permissions - We only request what's needed
