What is Kao?
Kao is a Discord emote management platform that lets you import emotes from 7TV, BetterTTV, FrankerFaceZ, and EmojiGG directly into your Discord server.
Is Kao free?
Kao offers a free tier with basic features. Premium plans are available for users who need additional features and higher limits.
Do I need to create my own Discord bot?
Yes, Kao uses a "Bring Your Own Bot" (BYOB) model. You create a Discord bot and connect it to Kao. This gives you full control over your bot and its identity.
Which emote platforms are supported?
Kao supports:
- 7TV - Including animated emotes and emote sets
- BetterTTV (BTTV) - Including animated emotes
- FrankerFaceZ (FFZ) - Static emotes only
- EmojiGG - Including animated emotes
Bot Questions
How do I create a Discord bot?
- Go to the Discord Developer Portal
- Click New Application
- Go to Bot in the sidebar
- Click Reset Token to generate your bot token
- Copy the token and paste it into Kao

Is my bot token safe?
Yes. Bot tokens are encrypted before being stored. We never log or expose your token.
Can I use the same bot for multiple servers?
Yes! Your bot can be in multiple Discord servers. When importing emotes, you select which server to import to.
What permissions does my bot need?
At minimum, your bot needs:
- Manage Emojis and Stickers - To upload and manage emotes
My bot isn't responding. What's wrong?
- Check that your bot token is still valid
- Verify the bot has necessary permissions in the server
- Make sure the bot is actually in the target server
- Check if Discord is experiencing issues
Emote Questions
How many emotes can I import?
This depends on your Discord server's boost level:

Can I import animated emotes?
Yes, from 7TV and BetterTTV. FrankerFaceZ only has static emotes.
Why did my emote import fail?
Common reasons:
- Server is at emoji capacity
- Bot lacks Manage Emojis permission
- Invalid emoji name (must be 2-32 characters, alphanumeric/underscore only)
- Source platform is temporarily unavailable
- Emote file is too large
Can I rename emotes after importing?
Yes, you can rename emotes from the Emojis management page in your dashboard.
Can I delete emotes I imported?
Yes, both individually and in bulk from the management page.
Account Questions
How do I sign in?
Kao uses Discord for authentication. Click "Get Started" and authorize with your Discord account.
What Discord permissions does Kao need?
Kao only requests:
- identify - Your Discord ID and username
- guilds - List of servers you're in
We cannot read messages, post on your behalf, or access server content.
How do I sign out?
Click your profile avatar in the dashboard and select "Sign Out".
Can I delete my account?
Yes. Go to Settings in your dashboard and use the account deletion option. This permanently removes all your data from Kao, including bots, imports, and activity history. A full data export is provided before deletion for GDPR compliance.
Can I share server access with my team?
Yes. Kao supports role-based team permissions. Go to your server settings and invite team members with viewer, editor, or admin roles. Each role has different levels of access to emoji management features.
Is Kao available in other languages?
Yes. Kao supports multiple languages through community-driven translations. You can change your language in the dashboard settings. Want to contribute a translation? Visit the translations page to get started.
Collections, Rotations & Sync
What are Collections?
Collections are reusable groups of emotes you organize yourself. Use them to curate themed sets, power rotations, or share favorites. See the Collections guide.
How do Rotations work?
Rotations automatically swap your server's emojis on a schedule. Pick a collection, set an interval, and Kao replaces your server's emotes at each rotation. See the Rotations guide.
What are Sync Groups?
Sync groups keep emotes consistent across multiple servers. Choose a source (collection or server) and Kao syncs those emotes to your target servers. See the Sync Groups guide.
Can I back up my server's emojis?
Yes. Create a backup from the Backups page to snapshot all emojis. Restore to the same or different server, or convert the backup into a collection. See the Backups guide.
What is the Emote Creator?
The Emote Creator lets you build custom emotes by layering overlays on base emotes. Design with a canvas editor and import the result as a server emoji. See the Emote Creator guide.
Billing & Plans
What plans are available?
Visit the Pricing page or the Billing section of your dashboard to compare plans. Each plan unlocks higher limits for rotations, sync groups, backups, and more.
What payment methods are accepted?
Kao accepts credit cards (via Stripe) and cryptocurrency (via NowPayments).
Can I cancel my subscription?
Yes. Cancel anytime from the Billing page. Your plan stays active until the end of the current billing period. See the Billing guide.
Troubleshooting
"Invalid bot token" error
- Make sure you copied the entire token
- Check if the bot was deleted from Discord Developer Portal
- The token may have been reset - generate a new one
"Bot not in server" error
- Use the invite link provided by Kao
- Make sure you selected the correct server when inviting
- Check if someone kicked the bot from the server
"Rate limited" error
You're making too many requests. Wait a minute and try again.
Emotes appear blurry
Discord automatically compresses emojis. Use the highest resolution source when possible (7TV typically has the best quality).
